Finance minister, Hon. Ken Ofori-Atta, has asserted that he has examined that there is a wide opening between what students acquire in the universities and what the industries expect of them when they graduate.

He explained that while employers are searching for individuals to occupy certain roles in their companies, they are unable to find graduates with the skills set they are gawking for.
Disseminating at the 73rd Annual New Year School and Conference at the University of Ghana, Hon. Ken Ofori-Atta said there is the need for university training to be in line with the industry needs especially when there is a case of increasing unemployment among the Ghanaian youths.

According to the finance minister, approximately 6.6 million young people will be attainable for the job market in 2024 and that the public territory is already ample.
Thus, there is the necessity for graduates to be tutored adequately so they invest into entrepreneurship.
Hon. Ofori-Atta also indicated that “ 85% of the unemployed youths have just left the senior high school level, what do we do to them? How do we offer them vocational practice to become efficient citizens?
Over 50% of tertiary degrees registration happens in fields with insufficient or no future expansion, how do we unravel that in the way we tutor our graduates? “
The Finance minister also urged universities in Ghana to expend more awareness to the changes in the global economy and to align the training they offer their students.

He accentuated the need to take advantage of the thriving digital economy and educate more communication technology-savvy graduates.
Even though the jobs in that trend we have less than a thousand graduates with IT-related skills every year from our universities.
What has compel the universities to sleep without acknowledging this crucial transformation where the world is headed? “
According to Hon. Ken Ofori-Atta, there is also the need to handle the circumstance where jobs are vacant but graduates are not able to take up jobs because they don't have those capabilities.
